The history of Chocolat Frey AG is nearly as old as the European chocolate industry itself.
In 1887, Robert and Max Frey (pronounced FRAY) began a chocolate company in the village of Aarau, Switzerland.
In its early days, the company greatly influenced the shift from chocolate as an indulgence for the privileged few to chocolate as a sweet treat enjoyed by many. Over the years, this small family business has grown into what is today the best-selling chocolate in Switzerland.
In 1950, Migros, Switzerland’s largest conglomerate of food, retail and financial services, acquired Chocolat Frey AG. Then in 1967, due to its fast growth and increasing popularity, Chocolat Frey moved its production facility from the village of Aarau to a newly constructed plant in Buchs, Canton Aargau. Most recently, the company has completed construction of a modern tank store and a new state-of-the-art cocoa bean processing plant as part of its passion for producing high-quality chocolate.
While Migros has provided private label chocolate to over 40 countries around the world for many years, the Chocolat Frey brand was first exported outside of Switzerland in 2006. The United States was the lucky recipient of this first delicious shipment from the chocolate capital of the world.
Chocolat Frey is the only major chocolate brand produced entirely in Switzerland. Thus, it is honored with the “Genuine Swiss” designation from the Association of Swiss Chocolate Manufacturers.
